LANGUAGEtech, Inc. (LTI) was founded in January 1998 and serves the Central Iowa market in
all things related to languages: teaching, interpreting and translating.
A significant segment of LTI’s business is interpreting, concentrated on educational, social and
medical services interpreting. In 2008, LTI worked with more than 80 independent contractor
interpreters to provide services to more than 60 organizations, covering 3000+ interpreted
appointments (4000+ hours) in over 20 languages.
Languages we’ve interpreted this year include Arabic, American Sign Language (ASL), Bosnian,
Burmese, Cambodian, Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin), Dinka, French, Karen, Kirundi, Kiswahili,
Korean, Krahn, Lao, Nepali, Nuer, Russian, Somali, Spanish, Telugu, Thai, and Vietnamese. As
other language needs arise in town, we continue to expand our services.
LTI seeks to contract the best interpreters possible. Many of the interpreters have taken
interpreting and translating classes through the local community college (DMACC) and
participated in interpreter workshops offered locally by various organizations; several are listed
on the State of Iowa Roster of Court Interpreters.
Each year LTI supports continuing education opportunities for its interpreters. In past years LTI
has: (a) paid the course fee for interpreters to attend Basic Interpreter Training at Mercy Medical
Center in Des Moines; (b) paid the conference fee for interpreters to attend the annual conference
of the Iowa Interpreters and Translators Association; (c) purchased medical or other specialized
dual-language dictionaries for interpreters; and, (d) partnered with Iowa Health Des Moines to
offer interpreter workshops.
Once interpreters are contracted and have completed LTI’s basic orientation to interpreting, LTI
relies upon client feedback, job shadowing and on-going training to make sure its interpreters are
the best available.
In addition to LTI’s high expectations for interpreter excellence and professionalism,
LTI insists on providing beyond-expectations customer service. It’s not enough that an individual
be a great interpreter, she must also radiate a customer service attitude. As a company, it is not
enough to provide top-notch interpreters; client companies must see LTI as a partner, someone
who cares about their business and their clients.
Inquiries about LTI’s interpreting services should be directed to Forrest Corson, owner and vice
president.
